ARTHUR LAURENTS: 1917-2011 -- Brooklyn-born playwright Arthur Laurents, whose musicals 'West Side Story' and 'Gypsy' made him a Broadway legend, died on May 5 at the age of 93. Laurents, a two-time Tony Award winner, passed away at his Manhattan home from complications of pneumonia, a family spokesman said. His agent, Jonathan Lomma, said Laurents died 'peacefully in his sleep.' Lomma told the Los Angeles Times that Laurents upon his death wanted it noted that 'he was predeceased by his partner, Tom Hatcher, with whom he had lived in happiness for more than 50 years.' According to Broadway tradition, theater lights were dimmed for one minute at 8 p.m. on May 6 in his memory.
