DR JACK KEVORKIAN: 1928-2011 -- Dr. Jack Kevorkian, a Michigan pathologist who championed a patient's right to die by assisted suicide, passed away on June 3. He was 83. Kevorkian claimed to have helped at least 130 patients end their lives and famously declared 'dying is not a crime.' He broke down social taboos about death and was convicted of second-degree murder in 1999 after giving lethal drugs to a patient stricken with Lou Gehrig's disease. Nicknamed 'Dr. Death,' the American Medical Association called him 'a reckless instrument of death' who 'poses a great threat to the public' in 1995.
